Handmade Sheepskin Gloves

Here at Draper of Glastonbury we are experts and handcrafting the finest quality sheepskin products; including handmade sheepskin gloves, slippers, and boots, and our factory in Somerset was established in 1937 so we have over 80 years of experience that goes into each and every glove we produce. Our gloves are handmade from start to finish; they are hand cut, hand sewn and hand lasted, by expert craftsmen who have a lifetime of experience working with sheepskin.

Sheepskin is an unpredictable natural product, and no two skins are the same. This is why only the most experienced professional craftspeople are able to produce the best handcrafted sheepskin gloves, as there are many different factors that need to be taken into consideration when making them. Only the softest sheepskins can be used to make gloves because they need to be flexible for your hands and fingers and they need to be very comfortable to wear and warm of course. Typically merino skins are used for making hand sewn sheepskin gloves, rather than thicker British sheepskins which are better for the manufacture of footwear.

Our sheepskin gloves made by hand are hand lasted, and this means they are put onto heated glove lasts which are the shape of the hand that we want each glove to fit. A medium sized women’s sheepskin glove will have a different last to a women’s small or large glove, for example. When the sheepskin is put under a lot of heat, it shrinks to the shape of the heated item that you are putting it around. So once we have stitched our fingerless sheepskin gloves together, they are lasted and heated to form the exact shape and size that we require.
This ensures that our gloves are standardised and the sizing and fitting are exact. Each size of each style of the glove has its own last.

We started making gloves during the Second World War; we made safety leather and asbestos gloves, and soon when the war ended, we started making mens hand sewn sheepskin gloves and slippers. We are now the oldest makers of sheepskin products in Glastonbury when there were once thousands of people employed in the sheepskin industry in the local area. Glastonbury has been famous for sheepskin since the 12th century AD when the monks of Glastonbury Abbey began tanning skins.

We have many different colour and styles of ladies hand sewn sheepskin gloves available, for both men and women. Each and every pair is handmade, and they take around four weeks to finish. You can order directly with us online, or request our mail order catalogue too. We also have a factory shop in Glastonbury which is very popular and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
